Step 2: Course of Study

Instrumental lessons in violin, piano, cello, flute, and guitar are available for children ages 3 and up. Children who have not yet chosen the instrument they wish to study may participate in Talent-Ed Kids program, a course specifically designed to introduce children to the fundamentals of music, as well as to the instruments we offer for private instruction. Children who love to sing may enroll in the Hearts & Voices Choir, with one choir for children ages 5-7 and one for children ages 8-10.

Step 5: Acquiring Your Instrument

Violin: Students begin with a box violin that doesn't break when dropped! Students will be measured for their instrument at the first lesson and TESS will order the violin on your behalf from David Segal Violins in New York City. We recommend them for their knowledge, fair pricing, and amazing service. Invoices for the violin will be in the case and are payable directly to David Segal Violins within thirty days. When the child is done with the instrument, David Segal Violins will buy the instrument back minus the cost of preparing the case, bow, and instrument for the next buyer. Customers will receive a check or a credit towards the purchase of the next size.

Cello: Students under the age of five begin with a foam cello until they learn to care for the instrument properly. Students will be measured for their instruments at the first lesson and parents can order the appropriate size directly from Johnson Strings in Boston. Families typically begin with rentals, a percentage of which can be cashed in towards the purchase of an instrument when appropriate.

Guitar: Guitar students aged five and under need to purchase a 1/4 size guitar, a K & M Guitar Foot Rest (www.ymonline.com) and a Mammut Children's Stool (www.ikea.com). It is highly recommended that the beginning student purchase a hand made guitar with a hard case from luthier Moreno Moore, www.morenomoore.cl/english.suzuki.html. Guitar students over the age of five need to be measured for their instrument size prior to beginning lessons.

Flute: Flute students under ten should purchase a curved head joint with the flute. Flutes may be ordered from Cinncinati Flute Works.

Piano: Students should have an acoustic piano. The sound of an acoustic piano, the weight of the keys, and the distance between the keys are different from an electric keyboard. Although some electric keyboards have weighted keys, they do not produce the tone your child will be learning in their lessons. We recommend Steinway Piano Gallery in Westport, and Fry's Westport Fairfield Piano & Organ in Fairfield.
