Suzuki Education

Suzuki education is the biggest advantage you can give your child!  It is first a philosophy, an approach to education that centers on the development of the child.  Dr. Suzuki enjoyed teaching young children because he viewed them as a “fresh slate”, having no bad habits, either as people or as musicians.  He saw music education as an opportunity to be a positive influence in a child’s life.  He hoped that as a child developed sensitivity to music, he or she would develop sensitivity to fellow citizens.  He believed the beauty in music would inspire them to seek beauty in the world and aspire for peace and not war.

Suzuki lessons are a gift to your child.  Through their musical studies, they attain the ability to concentrate and focus.  Their memory skills are developed, and cognitive thinking skills are enhanced.  They improve physical dexterity and endurance.  They learn to set a goal, plan the steps necessary to accomplish that goal, and acquire the perseverance and determination necessary to reach their goal – over and over again.  They discover how to learn and to enjoy the process, even while recognizing that it is hard work.  They obtain the ability to express themselves musically and gain a uniquely artistic voice.  They will carry this voice throughout life, regardless of what profession they pursue.  And their deep understanding and appreciation for music will lead them to the enjoyment of all of life’s beauty as adults.

Suzuki education is also a pedagogy.  Suzuki teachers go through intense and continual training, both in technical studies of the repertoire, and in the art of teaching young children the joy of music. Your child is guaranteed a professionally trained teacher who will encourage and guide them through all of the ups and downs of the learning process.  It’s this rigorous and invigorating training that gives your teachers a toolbox full of tricks, tactics, and resources that support students and parents in achieving their utmost potential. It is not about teaching three-year-olds, or Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, or the Bach Double.  It is about breaking down the complexities of technique, music, and expression into small parts that are easily achievable to ensure success, and then to build on the foundation that is created by these successes.  It is about teaching the child sensitivity to the essence of music and the heart of the composer in the hope that he or she will develop sensitivity to others.  It is the belief that excellence of character produces excellent music.  These tools can be applied to three-year-olds as well as teenagers, to Twinkle as well as the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, and to learning jazz by ear as well as reading complex 21st century classical pieces.
